DEMO 07: VCs in a Cab

February 8th, 2007

What do a bunch of elite venture capital folks do after a long day at DEMO 07 in Palm Desert, Calif.? They pile into a cab to have a chat about the day’s highlights. Here, PodTech Founder and CEO John Furrier goes over the shows’ greatest hits with Craig Syverson, Christine Herron, David Hornik and Vivek Mehra, all from the inside of a taxi. (One highlight of the everyone agreed on, by the way: a technology called ZINK — it stands for “zero ink.” You can see the demo here.)

guitar hero backburner cousin dj headlines

Filed under: Everything — everything @ 4:57 am

DJ Hero, the estranged cousin of Guitar Hero, has been anticipated and watched by many, but has somewhat fallen to the backburner as of late.

The game has only stolen headlines a few times throughout it’s short history, but when its made news, its always been big, such as when Activision and the DJ Hero team threw the party of the decade featuring Eminem and Jay-Z performing together.

I’ve been reading articles online recently about how DJ Hero demo stands have been popping up all over the country in stores like Best Buy and GameStop and decided it was long-past time to try it out for myself.

Upon venturing to my local Best Buy, I found that where the Guitar Hero is still in place and they have simply added the turntable hardware and popped in the DJ Hero demo-disc. I played through two songs, which more than allowed me to understand the mechanics of the game.

The turntable features three buttons, which correspond to the three streaks on the on-screen highway. The green line will shift left occasionally, which means the player will have to throw the switch far-left quickly. The blue line will do the same thing, only it will shift right, requiring the player to throw the switch far-right quickly. When these lines are in the middle, the switch fittingly sits in the middle.

As seen in the picture above, a fat “scratch” section will come through the lines occasionally, which requires the player to hold down the button of whatever color has the scratch section and turn the turntable to simulate scratching the record.

As a skilled Guitar Hero/Rock Band player at all instruments, I must say it took me the entirety of both songs to get the hang of how to play the game efficiently. Even though I was playing on a pretty modest level of difficulty, I still was glad the demo had a built-in “no fail” mode.

All in all, the demo was fun, but I think I’ll probably be waiting for the full package to come down in price before I snag it.

For a more in-depth look at DJ Hero, including a list of all the songs in the game, visit my other preview of this game here.

gran turismo 5 polyphony digital playstation store trial demo time trial

Filed under: Everything — everything @ 12:55 am

On December 17th, Sony and Polyphony Digital will release a Time Trial demo of Gran Turismo 5. Its purpose? To launch the GT Academy 2010.

The GT Academy 2010 Time Trial will be released onto the PlayStation Store on December 17th, and will be the only way to enter next year’s GT Academy.

Last year’s Academy discovered Lucas Ordenes, who, after winning the competition, went onto drive for the Nissan PlayStation team taking an immense second place position in the GT4 Championship.

The 2010 Academy will be your first chance to get your hands on Gran Turismo 5 in its current form, featuring a specially created section of a new GT5 circuit and the Nissan 370Z in two guises:  race-tuned and non-tuned versions.

Kazunori Yamauchi, president of Polyphony Digital and creator of the Gran Turismo series commented:

This has been a very rewarding partnership. The whole GT Academy concept is very close to my heart. Our target with the Gran Turismo series has always been to come as close as possible to a real driving experience.

To witness the level of driving achieved by GT players after a relatively short space of time at the GT Academy was very satisfying for me and I look forward to seeing the 2010 finalists in action.

I am also very happy to have the opportunity for our GT community to have a preview of the Gran Turismo 5 game.

If you qualify in the top twenty in your country, you’ll be invited to a national event to battle against the rest. If you make it out of there alive you’ll join the elite twenty in the GT Academy – a five-day test of nerve and skill.

Only two drivers will make it out of this test, with an intensive driver training schedule used to pick the GT Academy winner.

The Academy will run in the following countries:  UK, Ireland, France, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, Austria, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Spain, Portugal, Netherlands, Belgium, Australia, New Zealand.

However, if you’re not in the above listed countries, you’ll still be able to download the GT5 Time Trial demo.

Find out more about the GT Academy in the video below and on the Official PlayStation Blog. Also enjoy browsing our Gran Turismo 5 screenshot gallery here.

[UPDATE] - Sony and Polyphony Digital have revealed that the US and Canada will each run their own contest, with seperate winners from each country.

The winners with the best combined times will win a round trip for two to attend the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race on May 30th 2010 with VIP access. Five runner-ups in the US and five in Canada will receive a voucher to download Gran Turismo for the PSP.

Demo: Darksiders

February 25th, 2010

Darksiders demo is now available for download on the Xbox Live Marketplace. The demo is available in all Xbox Live regions (except Japan).

Deceived by the forces of evil into prematurely bringing about the end of the world, War—the first Horseman of the Apocalypse—stands accused of breaking the sacred law by inciting a war between Heaven and Hell. In the slaughter that ensued, the demonic forces defeated the heavenly hosts and laid claim to the Earth. Brought before the sacred Charred Council, War is indicted for his crimes and stripped of his powers. Dishonored and facing his own death, War is given the opportunity to return to Earth to search for the truth and punish those responsible in Darksiders.

Now, hunted by a vengeful group of Angels, War must take on the forces of Hell, forge uneasy alliances with the very demons he hunts, and journey across the ravaged remains of the Earth on his quest for vengeance and vindication.

The 30 Second Demo

April 20th, 2009

One of my signatures in product demonstrations is to start with a “30 second demo”. In most cases this is a demonstration of a key feature of the software, such as a simple configuration, that I do right at the start of my presentation. There are a lot of good reasons to start a presentation in this way.
When I say, “the start of my presentation”, I really mean at the very beginning, even before I introduce myself. Studies have shown that people are most focused at the start and end of an activity, including a presentation. The first few minutes of a presentation are critical, and often wasted on introductions of both individuals and companies. To take advantage of this phenomena, the first words out of my mouth once I am introduced are:

“Hi, before I get started, I wanted to show you something quickly”

Then I dive right into the application and show a 30-second demo of one key feature that I want to highlight. Immediately after that, without pausing to allow for questions:

“My name is Dave Sohigian, and that is just one quick example of the power of our applications. We’ll refer back to what you just saw in that demo as we go through these topics…”

Here is an example (actually about 45 seconds) showing how to add a plugin to Wordpress:

Where you go from here is up to you, but the point is to get the product in front of the prospect as early as possible. In the example above I could refer back to this quick “demo” whenever there were gaps in Wordpress functionality that required a plugin (“you already saw how easy it would be to add a plugin…”).

The 30-second demo accomplishes many things:

  • Shows them product while their attention is very high at the start of the presentation
  • Gives them comfort that they will see your product before the end of the demonstration
  • Many people that attend a demo are itching to see how the product performs. Although it is very useful to give them a context for your demonstration and you need to build your credibility with an effective introduction, there will be people in the audience getting impatient right from the start. “Would you just do the demo?” you can almost hear them saying during the obligatory company introduction and list of key features. By doing a demo, even a ridiculously short one, you can put these people at ease so that they are more likely to hear your initial message.
  • Ensures that everyone sees the product, at least a little.
  • Often people come and go during a demonstration, but most try to at least make it to the beginning. By doing a quick and effective demo you can ensure that everyone will have a chance to see something powerful about the application.
  • Avoids starting at the beginning This post from Kathy Sierra at Passionate Users outlines how you should start “after chapter one” in your presentation, and doing a quick demo does just that. You get to the compelling stuff first and add a bit of mystery about where you are going right from the start.

So instead of making your audience squirm in their seats while they “wait” through your introduction and setup slides, why not just give them a quick taste of what is to come. Try it in your next demo!
