entry screens serious business xml file business applications ui

WANTED: Developers who can contribute to this open source initiative :)

I have created a google project to put in some of the stuff that we have been working on and releasing through this blog. Some of the stuff that you can already download from Flexedtoolkit are -

  1. Autorefresher
  2. Client Idle Timeout
  3. Custom Alerts
  4. Custom Grid

I am working on a small component - CForms. The idea is to have a generic UI rendering engine that will create forms from an XML file. This is particularly useful in serious business applications where you have a lot of user entry screens. So, if the developer needs to have a screen, they just include something like -

<widgets:CForm controlsFile=â€controls.xml†id=â€VLANâ€/>

Everything else - Styles, layout, look and feel etc. will be handled by the CForm component as per instructions in the abc.xml… Getting a picture?

We initially did this as part of my project requirements at work. And it was a life-saver. Now, I would like to extend it beyond what it is today. I want to make it more generic and feature rich so that others can leverage on it.

The project homepage is http://code.google.com/p/flexedtoolkit. If you are interested in joining the project, do leave a comment. :) Really hope some of you folks would find time to work on this.

flex web google document application buzzword thm

Buzzword

I guess this is already old news by now. But, I just recently happened to check it out. I came to know about such an application when my Manager suggested it. After trying it out, I have one word - AWESOME!!!!

Ok. What I am talking about here is a full fledged online document application (Yeah! Just like Writely, Google Docs) developed in FLEX!!!! I was amazed at not only how feature rich the app was. I was stumbled totally because many of the stuff they have achieved. They have done stuff which I never thought was possible using Flex.

For me, Buzzword definitely takes Flex to the next level. It has been developed by the folks at Virtual Ubiquity. It says on their site -

Buzzword, the first real word processor for the web, is a breakthrough in collaborative authoring for documents that matter. Many online pundits agree with us.

And Guess what? Adobe is acquiring them. You can register and try it out yourself here. Check out the screenshots here. Click on thm to see a larger view.

william ackman source research memory lane trip down open source

Open Source Research

Writing by on Thursday, 31 of January , 2008 at 2:10 pm

This topic I posted on earlier took me on a trip down memory lane this morning. A comment to my earlier post took me to this blog in search of a link to William Ackman’s letter to the SEC.

In that letter, Ackman states:

“Our primary goal is to initiate what we call “Open Source Researchâ€
where all market participants can have equal access to the primary
source data and construct their own views of losses without reliance on
the analytical judgment of rating agencies or the bond insurance
industry. By focusing the discussion on a fundamental, data-driven
approach, we expect that the dissemination of the Open Source Model
will enable market participants and regulators to accurately estimate
probable losses by relying on rigorous fundamental analysis of specific
credit exposures, a departure from relying on the opaque, faith-based
pronouncements that the bond insurance industry has promulgated to the
marketplace.”

When I read that I recalled that I wrote a post proposing an open source model for research titled Open Source Research back in 2004. I am thrilled that it has become a theme that real market participants are embracing.

One thing Ackman can do to help open source research happen is publish his reports in HTML directly on the web instead of in pdf format. As I said in my post from four years ago,

We need tools for distribution, collaboration, rating, reputation,
commerce (just because its open doesn’t mean it has to be free), and
communication to make this work.  And for the most part, they don’t
exist.

I’ve changed my thinking a bit since then on the “free” question as you can see in this video, but it sure looks like we still need better tools.

LocoRoco Demo: Holiday Edition

The PSP finally gets another demo. Unfortunantly it’s another LocoRoco trial, but it’s free, at least. The demo went live on the Japanese PSP site a few minutes ago, but has yet to hit the EU and North American websites.

To download the Japanese LocoRoco Holiday demo, go to the JP LocoRoco site and click the blue wintery picture at the bottom. In the pop-up window, select the PC version, click the bottom option, and then hit the download button. Transfer the EBOOT file onto your PSP via USB, in the directory PSP > GAME > NPJG90001 (you will need to create this folder).

Enjoy, and happy holidays everyone!

Blog sites with a lot of color images usually looks best with black background, which is exactly why I created Easy Black. Use the Theme Switcher in the sidebar and select Easy Black, play around and let me know what you think!

The will NOT be released until WP Theme Viewer fixes the thumbnail issues.
